CNBC: Crazed Nabobs Botch Chance

Back on September 11, 1970, Spiro Agnew, Vice-President of Richard Nixon, speaking at the California Republican  State Convention, described the Press as “Nattering Nabobs of Negativism.”  The phrase was authored by Nixon speech writer and adviser, the late William Safire.  Agnew went on in the same address to say the Press had formed their own 4-H Club–“Hopeless, Hysterical Hypochondriacs of History.” Pat Buchanan was also a writer for Nixon who described the Press as “Pusillanimous Pussyfooters.”

The Press has leaned Left for a long time but the Fourth Estate at one time made an effort to be objective.  That is gone now and the CNBC moderators at the Republican debate in Boulder, CO on October 28 demonstrated that they are now a branch of the Democrat Party.  Florida Senator Marco Rubio said that Hillary Clinton and the Democrats now have the biggest Political Action Committee (PAC) there is:  The Mainstream Press.

Senator Rubio further illustrated this fact by noting that Congressman Jim Jordan of OH proved that Hillary lied about a video causing the Benghazi attack on 9/11/12 when the next day she e-mailed her daughter and the President of Egypt that, “We know it was an Al-Qaeda attack.”  He noted that the Press, instead of calling Hillary out on this, said it was the greatest week of her campaign.   Hillary the liar is praised by the Press.  This reminds one of Bill Clinton emerging as the hero of Monicagate in the eye of the Press while Ken Starr, who investigated, was the villain.

Newt Gingrich wrote in The Washington Times following the CNBC debacle that this, “may go down in history as a major turning point in candidate-news media relations.”   He title his article The Miraculous Debate.  Republican audiences have known of this bias and hostility and open contempt for their candidates for years.  Newt Gingrich himself stood up to the media bias and attempted bullying at the 2012 debate before the South Carolina Primary–a primary he won which was the highlight of his 2012 candidacy.

The word Nabob originally referred to a person of Western Civilization travelling to the East of India and China, making a fortune and returning West to influence politics and culture.  Since Agnew’s address it has become colloquial for one who is not very bright.  This fits the Nabobs, John Harwood, Becky Quick and Carl Quintanilla and other elite media who seem to have not yet caught on that conservative audiences reward candidates who fight back against their liberal bias.

Frank Luntz reported Wednesday night that he had never seen as strong a response as Ted Cruz got for blasting the CNBC team.  That is an indication of the incentives Republicans now have for standing up to liberal journalists.  Americans by the millions are already standing up and walking away from the Mainline Press as CNBC, MSNBC, CNN and the old networks of CBS, NBC and ABC have smaller and smaller audiences.  FOX now dominates cable and, at times, has outdrawn the networks which are delivered free.

Gingrich notes that the miraculous part of Wednesday’s debate came in two stages.  First, the CNBC (Crazed Nabobs) team “was amazingly, consistently biased, arrogant and even contemptuous, to such a degree that virtually everyone understood that this was not a debate but a battle between two sides.  Second, at some point the Republican candidates rallied in mutual defense forming a united team by praising each other and attacking the real adversaries, the CNBC opposition.”

Newt went on in The Times to say for a time on Wednesday he thought he was watching scenes from Gladiator where Russell Crowe teaches his fellow gladiators to fight as a team and that he was witnessing, not a debate, but a battle.  After the battle candidate after candidate went on television, not so much to spin for themselves, but to speak positively about their fellow candidates.  One knows there is a profound change when the Donald speaks favorably of a fellow Republican seeking the nomination.

One candidate not high up in the polls but who keeps on coming is Chris Christie.  While he may not be the nominee he is someone to watch as he is smart and tough.  One of his shining moments on Wednesday was his ridicule and contempt for the question about regulating Fantasy Football.  He noted that we face a trillion dollar deficit and ISIS who wished to kill us and the moderators wanted to talk about regulating Fantasy Football.  The question went to Jeb Bush who fumbled it (no pun intended) as he has so much of his campaign.  Christie then jumped in to expose so much of the infantilism and trivia of much of modern journalism.  Future moderators would be smart, not nabobs, to meet what Newt calls “the Christie Standard for seriousness.”

Republican National Committee Chair, Reince Priebus issued a statement immediately after the debate making clear how disgusted he was with the CNBC performance but tweeted:  “In spite of the moderators, I’m proud of our team for standing up against the improper and unprofessional display put on by CNBC.  CNBC should be ashamed of how this debate was handled.”

Priebus insisted that if NBC Cable hosted a debate it not be the MSNBC team of Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow and Al Sharpton.  But the business channel was no better.  Despite Priebus’ effort, the liberal culture of NBC asserted itself and CNBC returned to the very gotcha games the RNC fought to avoid.  Liberalism, bias and a mean spirit toward conservatism has slithered so far into the culture of the Old Line Press that they cannot help themselves.  Indeed, they are so certain they are right and conservatives wrong that they cannot even entertain another side.  They demonstrated that they are the Crazed Nabobs of Botched Chance who show no contrition.

The brilliant Ted Cruz on Hannity may have offered the right principle for future debates:  simply ensure that the moderators have voted in a Republican Primary.  Former Speaker Gingrich closes his debate wrap up by stating:  “If the Cruz Proposal gets adopted Wednesday night will really have been a miraculous debate.”  Senator Cruz went on to suggest that he would like to see a debate moderated by Sean Hannity, Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh.  Watch the crazed Left howl bias if that were to happen.

Jonah Goldberg, writer for National Review and member of the Fox All Stars, predicted during Candidates Casino on Special Report last evening that the GOP ticket will be all Cuban.  One would assume he means a Rubio/Cruz ticket.  I would hold out for Rubio and Carly Fiorina or Cruz and Carly.  Such a Pachyderm ticket would appeal to Hispanics and be a counter to the “War on Women” Hillary is sure to launch if she is the Donkey nominee.

I would share something else that is sobering about the debacle of CNBC at the debate.  Thomas Jefferson said, “The only security for all is in a Free Press.”  But what happens when that freedom is sold to one party.  Then we become closer to the old Soviet Press of Tass and Pravda which printed only what was favorable to the Communist Party.  In short, the Press was not free and neither were the people.  This a dangerous place for our nation to be.

Jefferson, though considered the father of the Democrat Party, was really a small government man and quite conservative.   He would no longer recognize his Party as it has long since left Jack Kennedy.  You will recall Kennedy’s famous line at his inauguration about asking not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.  At the CNN Democrat debate that sentiment was rendered impotent and betrayed to become, “Ask how much free stuff can I get from my countrymen.”   And the answer from everyone on the stage save Jim Webb who left the race was, “Free education, free day care,  free health care, free everything including freedom from responsibility.”  That is also a dangerous place to be.

There was a time no Party would nominate an open liar for President, and if the lies were later exposed, that President would be forced from office as was Richard Nixon.  There was a time no Party would nominate someone who did not protect our diplomats though she was in charge of their security.   Secretary of State Hillary Clinton failed in that protection.

There was a time when leaders took responsibility as Harry Truman did with “The Buck Stops Here,” and Jack Kennedy did with The Bay of Pigs debacle which was set up before he ever took office.   What did Hillary do at the Benghazi Hearings?   Did she take responsibility?   No!  She blamed it on Security Professionals who did not let her know that Ambassador Chris Stevens had asked for additional security with some 600 requests.  But Hillary says she never got the word so it is not her fault.  Is this someone we want answering the 3 A.M phone call to the White House?  I hope not.

We are running out of chances to save a once great nation raised up by God to be a beacon of light and hope for the world and for our citizenry.  I pray every day for renewal of our land for the sake of our grandchildren and a generation yet unborn.  I believe God is more anxious to answer that prayer than we are willing to pray it.  Please join in Asking and keeping on asking, Seeking and keeping on seeking, and Knocking and keeping on knocking for the Lord’s redemption of our land.  Some day He is coming again.  Let us not be found empty handed.  Lord, hear and answer our prayers.

Creative Caucus vs. Controlling Caucus

Newt Gingrich is one of the most brilliant men ever to sit in Congress and perhaps the most intellectually gifted man to serve as Speaker of the House.  I rather regret that Paul Ryan of WI has apparently agreed, however reluctantly, to follow John Boehner as Speaker.  I am sorry to see this for two reasons:  First, Rep. Ryan has a young family to whom he is dedicated, and second, he is a gifted and insightful Chair of Ways and Means.  This is one of the most powerful posts in the House.  As Speaker, the Congressman will need spend many weekends traveling the country as the leader of Congress where now he spends that time with his family.

There is another reason I had hoped the GOP would remain deadlocked as to who should be the next Speaker.  One does not have to be a member of the House of Representatives to be Speaker and there was talk of turning again to Newt Gingrich.  If Mr. Newt were leading Congress again he would be unencumbered by having to run for a House seat every two years and thus be free to bring all his skill and brilliance to the task.  Ronald Reagan told his aids as they began his Administration in 1981, “We are not going to worry about polls or short term public opinion.  We are going to do what is right and, if there is a second term, it will take care of itself.”  Newt Gingrich would have had that kind of freedom as Speaker–do what is right and let the chips fall where they may.

Newt Gingrich has a PhD in American History and takes the long term view of what is needed in the nation.  He said recently that both he and Ronald Reagan as well as Congressman Jack Kemp were part of the Creative Caucus of Republicans as far back as the 1970’s.  They were opposed by the Controlling Caucus of the GOP which is another term for the Establishment.  One sees the difference between the two wings on the hot button issue of immigration.  The Creative Caucus welcomes immigrants who come legally and who can add to the Nation’s needs for an educated work force.  The Controlling Caucus wants an endless stream of workers (legal or not) who will work cheap harvesting crops and doing housekeeping in homes and hotels.

There are a number of troubling parallels between ancient Rome and modern America.  Rome began providing free bread and circuses to satisfy the masses.  We have more people on Food Stamps than ever before and most everyone has a large screen color TV for the NFL and cable movies and cell phones for instant communication.  Hordes of uncultured, uneducated tribes began to infiltrate the borders of the Roman Empire to the point that even the vaunted Roman legions could not control them nor could the government absorb them into Roman society.  Hedonism began to dominate Rome just as it is America.  The government became increasingly corrupt and lacking in any morality.  John Adams, second President of the United States said, “Freedom cannot survive without Judeo-Christian roots.”  These are mocked and attacked in our land today.

Do you remember the old ad from the 1980’s–“Fly Now, Pay Later.”  That was not a good emphasis even then as the bill came due at some point.  Today it is, “Fly Now & someone else will pay later.”  But in either case the bill does come due eventually and we are losing our ability to cover the cost of our indulgences.  That is why Detroit is bankrupt as is Stockton, CA.  Columnist George Will was raised in Champaign, IL, where his father was a professor at the prestigious University of Illinois.  Our daughter and two sons hold degrees from that school.   Two years ago George Will said his home state of Illinois could be facing bankruptcy.  At last the people seem to be waking up to these facts which may be one the reasons the state that gave us Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan (now Deep Blue) elected a self-made billionaire Republican as Governor in 2014.   I pray it is not too late for the entire nation to wake up.   Margaret Thatcher was right when she said, “The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other peoples’ money to spend.”

We had enough sense in 1980 to turn the hapless Jimmy Carter out of the Oval Office.  Unfortunately in 2012 we did not have that kind of practical understanding to do the same with the comical but radically dangerous Barack (my campaign has visited 57 states so far) Obama.  Too many Republicans stayed home that year and pouted rather than going to the polls or even voting by mail.  Thus we see chaos at home, the Middle East on fire and our great ally Israel threatened from every side.  And what does President BHO say:  “It is a great time in America.”  What says Hillary Clinton (only an FBI indictment away from being the Democrat nominee to follow Barack):  “I stand with the President.”

Not long ago Hillary would not be considered to represent a major Party as candidate for President.  This has nothing to do with gender.  The death of 4 brave Americans in Benghazi who pled for months for help she could have given would be a road block.  It was help that never came.  What is happening instead?  The Democrats and the media pile on the Benghazi Committee and praise Hillary for remaining calm in the face of 11 hours of assault from the mean Republicans.  Not long ago Bill Clinton would have been turned out of office for seducing an intern and harassing other women.  Who was blamed instead?  The Republicans were blamed for making so much of private conduct and Ken Starr for investigating the President as he was charged to do.  And the lap dog Press goes right along with the Democrats.

Who stands for morality in government today?  Certainly not the Democrats.  That ended when they kicked Joe Lieberman out of the Party.  The Republicans?  Not the Controlling Caucus which is largely silent on Benghazi.  No, not the Controlling Caucus as they focus their fire on Ted Cruz and Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina and even Ben Carson as they are of the Creative Caucus and thus a threat to the Controlling.

One can sense the pages of Scripture rustling and pointing us to Isaiah 5:20:  “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”   Proverbs 3:7 reads:  “Do not be wise in your own eyes;  Fear the Lord and depart from evil.”  Our nation passed and ignored an important warning on January 22, 2013 as that date marked 40 years of taking the lives of our unborn.  Roe v. Wade was decided on January 22, 1973 and Psalm 95:10-11 is up to the moment with, “For forty years I was grieved with that generation, And I said, ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways.  So I swore in My wrath, They shall never enter My rest.’ ”

God’s Wrath is on the way and it is a fearsome thing to behold.  It is one of the reasons “The heathen rage and the peoples plot in vain.” (Psalm 2:1)  Rage here indicates “assembling in tumult against the ways of God”–preferring darkness and evil over light and righteousness.

I suggest some responses in the face of the tumult.  First, let us be confident in God.  He will never let us down.  Whatever we face, He is going to prevail.  When Wellington fought Napoleon in 1815, battle updates were carried by signal flags.  As the people watched the first signal read, WELLINGTON DEFEATED.”  Smoke from the battlefield then blocked the vision of the anxious populace and they were filled with dismay.  But when the smoke cleared their dismay turned to joy as the rest of the message was:  “WELLINGTON DEFEATED NAPOLEON.”  Let us not be discouraged by the times.  “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for at the proper time we shall reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Gal. 6:9)

Let us work for renewal.  Saint Augustine said, “Pray as if it all depends upon God and work as if it all depends upon you.”  That might be better amended to close by saying, “Work depending upon the grace of God.”  John Wesley faced an England in the 18th century not unlike America in the 21st.  He said, “Give me 100 preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God (and I care not a straw whether they be clergy or lay);  such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the Kingdom of God upon this earth.”

My brother is working to teach and train Christian leaders to do the same for our land in this day.  He has written a book worth reading and studying titled: Re: Vision, The Key To Transforming Your Church,  published by Baker Books.   He is also flying across the nation at his own expense to meet with those leaders for hands on training.  In short, he is living out Gal. 6:9 and putting hands and feet to John Wesley’s words which are still up to date at this present moment and will be so until the Lord returns and wraps up history.

I would also suggest we find steel in our backbones from Joshua 24:15:  “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve. . . .But  as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”  Do you want to be on the side of liars and buck passers who say, “It’s all Bush’s fault?”   Or, “None of Ambassador Stevens’ scores of pleas for help reached my desk.  It stopped with the Security Specialists.”  Do you want to identify with one who says in the face of the deaths of 4 brave Americans in Benghazi, “What difference at this point does it make?”  Neither do I.   Or do you wish to say with the great General Joshua, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord!”

And which do you wish to stand with in the houses of power today in our land–the Creative Caucus of Newt Gingrich or the Controlling Caucus of all the Democrats and too many modern Republicans.  I think I know where the Founders who were creating a new nation under God would stand.  These were men of prayer who knew the Scriptures well as they were part of their education whether they be Christians like George Washington or Deists like Benjamin Franklin.  They knew they were part of the order God wished to write into the new nation and they stood with Him in the natural realm of things.

As we approach the 2016 General Election let us not fear the media and the P.C. crowd.  It is not reckless to look liars in the eye and point to their failings and the destruction of lives not only in Benghazi but here at home with the war on coal and on cops.  Let us not cower in saying, “All lives matter.”  Ronald Reagan said to the liberals in the 60’s, “At some point we should expect to see your programs improve life.  They do not.  They simply lead to other ineffective big government failure.”  Black conservatives and others need ask the minority community if they are better off after 8 years of Obama/Clinton and offer alternatives that can give life new meaning and purpose.

Finally, let us live confidently in the Lord.  Emmanuel means God with us.  We are not alone.  Let us claim the promises of Psalm 34:4, “I sought the Lord and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears.”   Let us be Creative under God, not Controlled by forces of evil that will not stand before Him.  Let us live joyfully in Him!

A Debate for the Deranged

Many people my age remember the 1960 debates between Jack Kennedy and Richard Nixon.  They were two WWII veterans, neither of whom had ever lost an election.  In a contest between two titans it was decided by 100,000 votes and was probably won by Nixon but for some slight of hand in LBJ’s TX and Richard Daly’s Chicago, IL.  There were no more Presidential debates until President Gerald Ford challenged Governor Jimmy Carter to debate him in 1976.  They have been part of every Presidential contest since.

The 1960 debate was especially elevating as two bright men who liked each other squared off.  Democrat Jack Kennedy told Republican Richard Nixon privately that if his Party nominated Adlai Stevenson again, he (Kennedy) was going to vote for Nixon.  Television was not in every home in 1960 and many people heard the debates only on radio.   Jack Kennedy spent the day of the first confrontation in his hotel going over talking points and practicing.  Nixon had hurt his knee and had lost several days of campaigning so he was on the trail right up to broadcast.  Kennedy was made up for TV and dressed in a black suit. Nixon wore the same gray suit in which he had campaigned all day, needed a shave and perspired heavily under the hot television lights.  His gray suit faded into the gray background of the studio while Kennedy in make up and dark suit stood out the entire evening.

People who watched the debate gave Kennedy the edge while those who only heard it and could not see the contrast gave Nixon the win.  For the next three debates Nixon followed Kennedy’s regimen the day of but the damage was done and JFK won with the caveat noted above.  Probably the most memorable debate since 1960 was 1980 as Governor Ronald Reagan faced President Jimmy Carter.  This is the most watched Presidential debate in history and is remembered for Reagan’s saying to Carter, “There you go again.”

I watch every debate I can and we do see some unusual things happen in the primary season such as Joe Biden’s saying in 2007, “Our problem is a three letter word:  JOBS.”  And Governor Perry’s saying there are three reasons for this followed by naming two and forgetting the third in the GOP primary of 2012.  This doomed him in 2015 and he was the first to drop out.

But I have never seen such a display of Left Wing Lunacy or so many crazy statements as we witnessed at the Democrat Debate on October 13.  Robert Tracinski of The Federalist picked up on these as well.  It began with opening statements when Martin O’Malley introduced himself as “The former Mayor of Baltimore.”  CNN anchor Anderson Cooper asked him straight out, “Is that really what you wish to emphasize with all the recent problems in that city?”  It was.

Hillary Clinton joined in on Keystone when she said, “I did not take a position on Keystone until I took a position on Keystone.”  This reminds one of John Kerry’s saying in 2004 that he voted for funding the war in Iraq before he voted against it.  Hillary followed up with her flip flop on the Pacific Trade Agreement (once all for it, now all against it) by saying she has a “range of views.”   Translation:  “I must match Bernie Sanders Far Left positions to win the Democrat vote in 2016.”  Hillary’s “range of views” reminds one of a line by Groucho Marx, “These are my principles.  If you don’t like them, I have others.”

Bernie Sanders bragged that he has a D- vote with the NRA.   Jim Webb who is a Viet Nam marine and highly decorated said he is for people having guns to defend themselves.  He proved throughout the evening that he was in the wrong debate.  He is the lone remaining Democrat of any prominence that makes one think of Jack Kennedy and Henry “Scoop” Jackson of Washington State.

Lincoln Chafee said, “We Democrats are not out to confiscate your guns.”  Really?   Chafee probably had not heard that Barack Obama is citing Australia as a model where they did confiscate guns in private hands.

Sanders said, “Iraq is the worst blunder in American history.”   He may be right as Obama pulled our troops out after we won the war through the Surge under George W. Bush.  Of course Bernie meant going into Iraq in the first place.  I think students of history might give that status to firing on Fort Sumter in 1861 which precipitated the Civil War, the most costly conflict in our history.  And I know some aging Viet Nam vets who would also dispute Iraq’s being our worst blunder of all time.

Bernie took another prize when he said he thinks Vladimir Putin regrets going into Crimea and claiming it from Ukraine.  Does the Russian leader really look like someone who lives with regret or reflection?   Unlike President Obama, Putin is a man of action not afraid to show his muscle literally by riding on a horse shirtless and figuratively by moving into Eastern Europe and Syria.

Hillary said she is proud to attach herself to Obama’s foreign policy.  Wow!   Even some mainstream journalists are beginning to question the President’s foreign policy as the Middle East burns, Russian rises and China builds a navy to rival ours.  But Obama is popular with what Rush Limbaugh calls low information voters who populate the Democrat Party and Hillary knows that.  She must win the Primary first.

Sanders said our planet will soon be uninhabitable.   Al Gore said we had about ten years left twenty years ago.  And the temperatures have been cooling for about that long.  Thus, the environmental extremists now speak of the more general Climate Change rather than Global Warming.  But again this appeals to the fringe–in other words–the new normal in the Democrat Party.

Bernie followed this by giving Hillary a pass on the e-mail scandal by saying, “The American People are sick of hearing about it.”   That is probably why 75% of Americans polled say Hillary is not trustworthy.  And the F.B.I. does not seem sick of hearing about it as they plunge ahead with their investigation.   That statement has been called Bernie Sanders’ surrender to Hillary Clinton even as he leads in IA and NH.

One question really demonstrates how demented the Party of Jefferson, Truman and Kennedy has become:  “Do black lives matter or do all lives matter.”  Jim Webb fought in Viet Nam as a sign that he believes all lives matter.  He stood tall on this and again it became clear he was at the wrong debate.

Sanders said he was the only non billionaire in the race.  He really is challenged on numbers and wealth.   Marco Rubio only recently retired his student loan debt.  Most of those running in the GOP are not even millionaires.  In fact, only one person can self-finance his campaign and he is known as The Donald.

Hillary again rivaled Bernie when she said, “I want all Americans to have the opportunities Bill and I have had.”   She apparently believes anyone can make 225,000 dollars/speech and she will accept no less.   Some who know her but are not fans say that the woman is obsessed with money.  That seems pretty clear.

Then Mrs. Clinton said, “I warned people about the crash of 2008 in 2007 but no one would listen.”   This sent journalists out fact checking.  The conclusion was that no one listened to Hillary because she made no such statement.

Lincoln Chafee is not going to be President but he made one admission that I have never heard before.  He said he voted to repeal Glass-Steagal which was a law limiting bank activity and part of the Holy Grail to Democrats.  One would think Socialist Bernie Sanders who is all about punishing banks would have landed on this but Chafee took care of it by saying he voted against Glass-Steagal because he was incompetent.   We know the stage was filled with incompetence on Tuesday evening but it is refreshing to hear someone admit it.  This is the same Lincoln Chafee who opened his campaign by saying, “Central to my run will be getting the United States on the Metric System.”

Other than Webb who has worn the uniform of the country with distinction, this crowd said they would end all wars.  This was an appeal to the youth vote and was really out of Comedy Central as only Martin O’Malley is below 65 and Hillary and Bernie are nearing 70 or beyond.  Should Joe Biden get in, he is also a Septuagenarian.  If one wants youth and diversity rather than white dinosaurs look to the GOP.

Hillary and Bernie were asked how they would pay for their 18 Trillion (with a T) dollar programs they said, “No problem.  The rich will pay the bill.”   I recall husband Bill Clinton leading a State of the Union address with, “The Era of Big Government is over.”   Apparently wife Hillary does not agree.

When asked to tell voters how she differs from Barack Obama  Hillary said she is a woman.  “I am woman, hear me roar.”  I was glad we got that cleared up.   As Rush likes to say, “Hillary puts on her pant suit one leg at a time-same as the other guys.”

Other than Jim Webb who will probably finish ahead only of Lincoln (let’s go metric) Chaffee, the Democrat cast could find a home on SNL.   How does a great nation come to this?  By cutting ourselves off from our spiritual roots and worshiping money and power rather than the One True God.

Essayist T.S. Eliot wrote in “The Rock:”

All our knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance,

All our ignorance brings us nearer to our death,

But nearness to death no nearer to God.

Then he asks the question that hangs over a whole generation:

Where is the Life we have lost in living?

Live for Jesus Who died for us and rose again and we find purpose and hope for life abundant and life eternal or live for self and become what we saw on Tuesday evening–lost people who want to lead a Lost People.

Malcolm Muggeridge was a 20th century British journalist with a biting tongue and wit who found Christ as Savior late in life.   After his conversion he addressed a group of journalists in January 1968 and stunned them when he said,  “As far as I am concerned, it is Christ or it is nothing.”

I rather think that the 2016 elections are going to determine the fate of our nation and whether we are lost or renewed.  Will it be the third term of Barack or recovery?   Muggeridge is right.  It is Christ or it is nothing.

Putin Unleashed

When Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Barack Obama met at the Untied Nations, our President welcomed Russian military force back to the Middle East.  The pretense was that Russia was going to help fight ISIS.  One wonders if Obama is so naïve that he actually believed that and was oblivious to the fact that he was being outmaneuvered.  It was clear to most that Putin was not in Syria to fight the Islamic State but to protect Syrian President Assad.

More embarrassment followed as a Russian general knocked on the door of our forces in Iraq to say we should not be flying as they would be.  And the Russian Air Force began bombing, not ISIS, but fighters we had trained.  Our Defense Secretary Ashton Carter bumbled that Russia’s actions exposed its policy as self-congratulatory.  This made one think of Obama and his Secretary of State John Kerry’s saying, as Putin invaded the Ukraine, “This does not happen in the 21st Century.”  Vladimir Putin kept pushing west.

Condi Rice, Secretary of State under George W. Bush, and Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense under Bush and Obama, wrote in The Washington Post of Putin’s push into Syria:  “Great Power Politics–yes people do that in the 21st Century.”  Rice and Gates have greater credibility than Obama, Kerry and Carter.  So does former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton who also served under George W. Bush.

He writes in the 10/12/15 issue of  The Weekly Standard, “Despite depressed global oil prices and economic sanctions intended to curb his Ukraine adventurism, Putin is pursuing military power and . . . economic influence in a region long under Washington’s sway.”  Henry (Scoop) Jackson was a conservative Democrat Senator (back when the Democrats were not all Far Left) from the state of Washington.  He described the Soviet Union as an “opportunistic hotel burglar who walks down the corridors trying all the door handles to see which door is open.”

Putin is probing U.S. weaknesses in ways not seen since Anwar Sadat expelled Soviet military advisers from Egypt in the 1970’s which paved the way for the Camp David accords with Israel.  And those American weaknesses due to a delusional President are strengthening Russian alliances with Syria and Iran.  All too typically Obama and John Kerry were caught by surprise by Putin’s aggression.  Our President told 60 Minutes that this aggression shows Russia’s vulnerability.  As we said, Obama is delusional and sees the world, not as it is, but as he wants it to be.  This is the childhood game of “Let’s Pretend.”

Most visibly threatening, Russia is selling Iran its S-300 air defense system.  Once deployed, the S-300 will end any prospect of Israel preemptively striking Iran’s nuclear-weapons program.  Ambassador Bolton says the other grave threat to U.S. and Western interests is a Russia-Iran-Syria axis reaching a truce with ISIS that threatens the oil producing monarchs in the Gulf States.

In response, American strategy needs, ironically, first to address Ukraine.  President Obama has never understood that Putin is really on weak ground in Ukraine.  If NATO responds vigorously with military support, Russian adventurism in the region will be threatened.  Senator John McCain has said our cowering before Russia is a Super Power bowing to a weak country with a gas station.  Standing up to Russia in Europe will also give moderate Arab States hope that we will back them.  Israel, Turkey and the Arabs must see that Washington has not permanently lost its backbone and Russia backing Iran clearly demonstrates that Putin is not their new best friend.

Washington must also lead a serious effort to destroy ISIS with the Gulf Arabs and Turkey supplying militarily and financially to that push.  Even Obama has said that ISIS must be destroyed.  But that is rhetoric and ends there with little or no action.

This means that the GOP candidates must make 2016 a national-security election.  And they must be willing to say and mean that all options are on the table regarding Iran’s nuclear program.  Remember that Iran released our hostages on January 20, 1981–the day that Ronald Reagan took office.  The Iranians and Russians know they have nothing to fear from this President.  Let the Republican candidates make it clear they are not Obama or Hillary Clinton and that there will be a new sheriff in town on January 20, 2017.  Every nation in the world knows they cannot stand up to American military might in the hands of someone who knows how to use it.  We certainly do not have that in Barack Obama but we could with a President Rubio or Fiorina or Cruz.  And John Bolton as Secretary of Defense would not be a bumbling Ash Carter.

The Chinese have a proverb for living a successful life:  “Dig your well before you get thirsty.”  Proverbs 6:6-8 has an example for it:  “Go to the ant . . . consider its ways . . . it has no commanders, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”   How unlike the ant is the lightning bug, about whose frustration an insightful poet wrote whimsically:

The lightning bug’s plight is a tragic one

It’s been said again and again.

For he cannot see where he’s going;

He can only see where he’s been!

Unfortunately we are led now by a President who does not even understand or appreciate where we have been.  Thus, he apologizes for our nation.   He certainly has no provision for the future like the ant.   Let’s not elect Hillary in 2016.  Marco Rubio is right.  She is so yesterday.  Let us turn to an individual in 2016 who can build on our past, who appreciates the present moment and has vision for the future.   Dear Lord, for the freedom loving everywhere, let it be so!

Hillary Hypocrisy on Guns

I have not hunted since I was in college and am not a member of the N.R.A.  But I am a strong supporter of the Bill of Rights including the 2nd Amendment which reads:  “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of the State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

It is not publicized but, according to the F.B.I.,  the murder rate in the U.S. is actually the lowest it has been since 1957.  One does not hear that as the President and his former Secretary of State seek to make political hay out of the recent and terrible loss of life at the hands of a crazed mad man in OR.  President Obama has been told by officials in Roseburg, OR that he is not welcome to come to their community, “to politically dance on the graves of our loved ones.” But never let a crisis go to waste.

A sensible President would not rush out the night of a tragedy like this with no facts before him so far as the perpetrator of the violence and openly say he is going to make this political.  And a sensible President would listen to the families and leaders of the community who have put away the welcome mat so far as Obama’s coming.  A truly caring man would address the violence in his home town of Chicago where he votes and owns a home.  A compassionate leader might attend the funeral of a young 15 year old girl who was innocently killed by stray bullets fired by gang members there, or a 9 year old and 4 year old similarly killed in the past.  But this does not fit his narrative or that of Hillary.  Chicago has very tough gun laws and, like the proposals of the President and the woman running for his Office, Chicago does not fit their narrative and advance their agenda as it demonstrates such laws in the Windy City do not work.

But Barack Obama is not a sensible man or leader.  As Governor Chris Christy said recently, “Barack Obama still thinks he is always right and that he is the smartest man in any room.”   That is delusional and dangerous.  So the President says he is going to OR on Friday.

It is slightly different with Hillary Clinton.  She told Obama during their debates in the 2008 cycle as they both ran for the Oval Office that his one size fits all was not right on gun control.  Now she is proposing exactly that with her plans to “close loopholes at gun shows.”  This is comical as Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (A.T.F.) Statute 18 U.S. Code # 921 already covers gun shows.  She is calling for closing a loophole that is not a loophole as it is already closed.  For those who plan to vote for the former Secretary of State, I will see your Hillary and raise you a Carly Fiorina.  If you are really looking for a fast on her feet, strong, smart, savvy woman as President, her name is not Clinton;  it is Carly.  Ronald Reagan said, “One day we will have a woman President and she will be a Republican.”   I hope he is right on this as he was on so many things.

Hillary is also a hypocrite as she decries the GOP for politicizing Benghazi.  Admittedly she was given a gift by the front runner to replace John Boehner as Speaker of the House.   Rep. Kevin McCarthy foolishly said that Benghazi had driven Hillary’s poll numbers down.  Benghazi Investigative Committee Chair, Trey Gowdy, has carefully avoided even the appearance of this being politically motivated.  There is every indication he wants to find out why four Americans died on 9/11/2012 even as our Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, asked Secretary of State Clinton for additional protective resources which went unheeded on her watch.  I hope the GOP will look for a more careful and seasoned Speaker as McCarty stepped all over Gowdy’s efforts to find the truth about Benghazi and then let the chips fall where they may.

But let us keep the focus on Mrs. Clinton.  She says the Republicans are politicizing the deaths of 4 brave Americans in Benghazi but then runs out to join Barack Obama in politicizing the death of 9 innocent Americans in OR by proposing foolish gun control measures.  Further, she says if Congress does not do what she wants, if President, she “will issue an executive order” to close a loophole that does not exist.

Hillary says the GOP is politicizing the deaths of 4 brave Americans in Benghazi.  McCarthy’s foolishness hurt Gowdy and the Party as I think that is not true.  But for the sake of argument if the Republicans are playing politics is it not ironic that Hillary, in the same interview with N.B.C., then politicizes the deaths of the young people in OR at the hands of a crazy man.

Are Barack, the man who thinks we have 57 States, and Hillary the Hypocrite the best the Democrats have to run?  For all his foibles I would take Bill back in a minute as I think many would in both Parties.   Fortunately  we have men and women such as Marco Rubio and Carly Fiorina and Ted Cruz as really smart alternatives.

Hillary for the umpteenth time is trying to change her image by appearing on SNL and hitting the old line networks and blasting the GOP, but the e-mails keep coming and the slow drip goes on.  Behind it all, Hillary Clinton is simply not a good candidate nor is she Presidential material.  Her eyes are steel, her countenance mean, her laugh obnoxious, her words do not ring true.  It has been said that you cannot teach someone not gifted with speed to run fast.  Her handlers cannot make this work for her as the new Hillary is the old Hillary.  She simply does not run fast or fair or far.

The media is trying to do their part as they always do, but they do not love her as they love Barack.  Many of them are frustrated by the e-mail scandal and what may be found on her server.   And they are afraid she will fail even if nominated and that she will take their beloved Democrat Party down with her.

My fears are different and involve the American Electorate.  In 1980 voters were smart enough to turn the hapless Jimmy Carter out of office.  In 2012 we returned a President more incompetent and more dangerous than Carter to the Oval Office.  My fear is we now have so many on welfare, so many into video games and parties, so many who are unaware of the dangers all about them (ignorance is not bliss forever), but they will blindly vote again and vote Democrat.

We pray daily for our nation and for renewal and for the fulfillment of God’s Promises in II Chronicles 7:14 for a healing of our land and echo Jeremiah’s words in Lamentations 5:21 for restoration to the Lord.   As II Chronicles 16:9 reads:  “The eyes of God wander to and fro over the whole horizon to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.”   May the eyes of God ranging over the entire horizon find us with faithful hearts loyal toward Him that He may show Himself strong on our behalf.
